LIFT-3 Detachable Chairlift — Terminal Grip Conveyor Isolation

Ropeway & tramway

Grip conveyor and tyre bank service in a detachable chairlift terminal. Covers the main drive, the auxiliary and evacuation drives that can turn the line independently, hydraulic tensioning, and rope movement driven by carriers on the line.

This is a worked example, not a procedure you can adopt. It describes equipment that does not exist, with illustrative tag numbers. 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(4) requires the employer to develop, document and utilise energy control procedures specific to their own machines, and (c)(6) requires the employer to inspect those procedures periodically. Neither duty can be delegated to a vendor or discharged by this document.

Isolation points

#Tag (illustrative)TypeDispositionWhat it does and whyDwell
10LIFT-3-MAINDisconnectIsolate & lockMain drive motor disconnect at the terminal switchboard.
Caution: A detachable lift has three ways to turn the line. This is only the first.
Open, lock, prove dead at the motor terminals.
—
20LIFT-3-AUXDisconnectIsolate & lockAuxiliary drive, used to creep the line for maintenance.
Caution: The auxiliary drive exists precisely to move the line during maintenance. It is the one that moves the rope while someone is in the terminal.
Open and lock the auxiliary drive disconnect.
—
30LIFT-3-EVACSwitchIsolate & lockEvacuation drive, an independent diesel or hydraulic unit for line evacuation.
Caution: The evacuation drive is independent of the electrical supply by design. Isolating the switchboard does nothing to it.
Place the evacuation drive selector to OFF, lock, and remove the starting key.
—
40LIFT-3-BRAKE-SVCValveIsolate & lockService brake on the drive bullwheel, spring-applied and hydraulically released.
Caution: These brakes release on pressure. A charged accumulator is a release path that survives electrical isolation.
Close and lock the brake hydraulic supply, then bleed the accumulator so the brake stays spring-applied.
120s
50LIFT-3-BRAKE-EMGBlockApply & verifyEmergency brake on the bullwheel rim.
Caution: Both brakes must be accounted for. Crews check the service brake and assume the emergency brake follows it.
Confirm the emergency brake is set and its accumulator bled. Must remain APPLIED.
—
60LIFT-3-ROPE-CLAMPBlockApply & verifyRope clamp applied at the terminal to prevent line movement.
Caution: Carriers on a loaded line pull the rope through the terminal under gravity even with every drive isolated. The clamp is the restraint.
Apply the rope clamp and confirm it is torqued. Must be ENGAGED.
—
70LIFT-3-TENSValveIsolate & lockHydraulic rope tensioning carriage at the return terminal.
Caution: Rope tension is stored energy across the whole line. Releasing it with the carriage off its stops moves the terminal structure.
Close and lock the tensioning supply, then bleed the tension accumulator and confirm the carriage is on its stops.
300s
80LIFT-3-GRIP-CONVDisconnectIsolate & lockGrip conveyor tyre bank drive within the terminal.
Caution: The tyre bank is what the crew has their hands in. It runs off its own drive, not the main.
Open and lock the conveyor drive disconnect.
—
90LIFT-3-AIRValveIsolate & lockTerminal compressed air to the grip test rig and door actuators.
Close and lock the supply and bleed the receiver.
60s
100LIFT-3-CTRLBreakerIsolate & lockLift control system and the terminal PLC.
Caution: Dropping control power releases some interlocks. Set the brakes first, then isolate controls.
Open and lock the control supply after confirming the brakes are mechanically set.
—
110LIFT-3-COMMSSwitchKEEP ENERGISEDTerminal to terminal communications and the line stop circuit.
Caution: The two terminals are out of sight of each other. The stop circuit is how a crew at the drive stops something at the return.
Do NOT isolate. Confirm the line stop circuit and terminal communications are functional.
—
120LIFT-3-HEATBreakerKEEP ENERGISEDTerminal heating and the grip heater bank.
Caution: Grips and hydraulics seize in a cold terminal, and the crew works there for hours.
Do NOT isolate in freezing conditions.

What your site must supply

  • Your own asset and isolation-point tag numbers. The tags shown are illustrative and refer to equipment that does not exist.
  • The actual location of every disconnect, valve and vent on your equipment.
  • Measured stored-energy magnitudes and the dwell time required to dissipate them.
  • Your verification method for each point, and who is authorised to perform it.
  • Any additional energy sources present on your equipment and absent here.

Authorship and validation

This example was authored by Setyr for domain validation. It is not derived from any customer's controlled documents. It illustrates the elements 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(4)(ii) requires a procedure to contain — it does not certify compliance, which is a property of an employer's programme rather than of any document.
