TP-12 Tablet Press — Tooling Change and Containment Isolation

Turret tooling change on a high-containment rotary tablet press handling a potent compound. Covers compression pre-load, turret rotation, wash-in-place lines, and the pressure cascade that must hold throughout because it is the containment.

This is a worked example, not an approved procedure

It refers to equipment that does not exist and illustrates the elements 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(4)(ii) requires a procedure to contain. It is not a document to adopt. Under (c)(4)(i) the employer must develop and document energy control procedures specific to their own machines, and under (c)(6) must inspect them at least annually.

The isolation plan

12 points, in sequence

Isolate & lock Isolated, locked and tagged as part of the isolation.
Apply & verify A physical state applied and then verified — not a lockable energy isolating device.
Must stay energised Deliberately left live. Removing this supply would create a hazard rather than remove one.

TP-12-MAIN Isolate & lock Disconnect

Press main disconnect at the machine panel.

Method: Open, lock, prove dead at the load side.

Caution: The turret carries residual rotation. Electrical isolation does not stop it turning.

TP-12-TURRET Apply & verify Block

Turret drive brake and the manual barring point.

Method: Engage the turret brake and confirm the barring tool is removed. Brake must be ENGAGED.

Caution: A turret barred by hand for tooling access rotates under the weight of the upper punches once released.

TP-12-COMP Isolate & lock Bleed 3 min dwell

Compression roll pre-load, hydraulically pre-tensioned to compression force.

Method: Release the compression pre-load at the release valve and confirm the force display reads zero before entering the compression zone.

Caution: The rolls hold tens of kilonewtons of pre-load at rest, and hands go directly into that zone during a tooling change.

TP-12-HYD Isolate & lock Disconnect 2 min dwell

Hydraulic power pack supplying compression pre-load and the turret clamp.

Method: Open and lock the power pack disconnect, then bleed the accumulator.

Caution: Bleeding after isolating removes the path that could re-apply pre-load.

TP-12-FEED Isolate & lock Valve

Powder feed frame drive and the hopper slide valve.

Method: Close the hopper slide, lock it, and isolate the feed frame drive.

Caution: An open hopper slide releases potent powder into the open machine when the turret is barred.

Wash-in-place spray header inside the compression chamber.

Method: Close and lock the WIP supply valve at the skid.

Caution: A WIP cycle triggered with the chamber open sprays hot detergent and potent residue into the room.

De-duster and tablet transfer chute drive.

Method: Open and lock.

Method: Close the supply, lock, and bleed the machine air header.

Caution: Inflatable containment seals deflate on loss of air. Bleed only once the containment strategy for the open machine is agreed.

Safe-change bag-in bag-out filter housing on the containment extract.

Method: Confirm the safe-change housing is intact and not breached before work begins.

Caution: A breached housing releases collected potent dust into the technical area behind the machine.

Containment pressure cascade holding the machine negative to the room.

Method: Do NOT isolate. Confirm the differential pressure is within limits and alarming before the machine is opened.

Caution: The cascade is what keeps a potent compound inside the machine. Losing it during a tooling change exposes the operator and the suite.

Dust extraction from the compression zone to the containment filter.

Method: Do NOT isolate. Confirm extraction flow before opening the compression chamber.

Caution: Extraction and the pressure cascade work together. Isolating either defeats both.

TP-12-ROOM-HVAC Must stay energised Breaker

Room HVAC serving the containment suite.

Method: Do NOT isolate. Room air changes must continue for the duration of the work.

Caution: Isolating room HVAC to work on the machine collapses the suite cascade and pushes contamination toward the corridor.
